Dealing with stresses, challenges of long distance relationships

As I’m sure many people can agree with me on this, let me just say that dating is everywhere. Especially on a college campus.Sometimes its people going out on their first dates or having a budding romance with that cute person who sits in front of them in their history lecture or, the luckiest ones, celebrating an anniversary together at a bar downtown. I know this sounds like I’m leading up to something bad, but I’m not, I promise. In fact, I’m in a relationship myself.I have a wonderful boyfriend of one year, one month and 18 days. And as someone in a committed, long-distance relationship with someone who is in college himself, I can tell you, firsthand, that it’s tough.Being away from the person you want to be around more than anyone else is one of the hardest things ever. I’ll be honest, when I first went off to college, I was a little scared that we’d be like a lot of post high school couples, where you try for a bit but then decide that the distance is just ‘too much’.Now, after being in college for over a year now, my relationship is still just as strong as it was at the start, and I feel like maybe I have learned some tips and tricks to help other enrolled college sweethearts make sure that they stay on the same page and involved in each other’s lives, even when school and life tries to get in the way. Please keep in mind though, I’m no expert and I barely know what I’m talking about.I’m just a college student in a long-distance relationship who wants to talk about what they do to stay connected with their partner. Now, onto the tips.First and foremost, find things to do. Not just for when you’re together, but for when you’re apart too.If you only get to see your partner on weekends, don’t spend your weekdays only going to your classes and then sitting around in your dorm, staring at the ceiling, waiting for them to come back. You need to find things that make you happy, even when they aren’t around. As much as it might feel like it now, your world shouldn’t revolve around them. You both have your own lives, and it’s okay for those lives to be separate sometimes. Both of you should find something to do, outside of school and each other, that brings you happiness and fulfillment. Or at the very least, just something fun to do when you aren’t together. When you are together though, it’s important to make an effort when it comes to visiting each other.Don’t always assume that it’s on your partner to drive down to your campus every weekend.
