Report: Alexander Wang is Headed to Balenciaga

Alexander Wang is the frontrunner to succeed Nicolas Ghesquiere as designer of Balenciaga, according to a report posted Wednesday night on nytimes.com. The American designer will be appointed as early as next week, "a Paris source with knowledge of the discussions," told the paper. Since Nicolas announced he would depart Balenciaga a few weeks ago, insiders started whispering about Alexander coming on board. "The choice of a designer like Mr. Wang, who has built a youthful following in New York and elsewhere, certainly suggests a different direction for Balenciaga," the Times reported. "And for Mr. Wang, a move to Paris would allow him to expand his career. One thing is for sure: if he does land at Balenciaga, he will immediately bring that buzz factor to the brand. His runway show is always one of the hardest invites to come by during New York Fashion Week and his laid back, edgy, downtown style (that almost could double as workout gear) is especially appealing to a younger crowd.
