Hsia-Fei Chang: Les Jeux Sont, Exhibitions

lt;p>Hsia-Fei Chang trained for more than six months as a croupier, and then worked at the Club Berri gambling club located near the Etoile in Paris.

For more than two years, she alternated between running Black-Jack, Punto Banco and Ultimate Poker tables

Imbricating daily life and fiction, Hsia-Fei Chang has undoubtedly achieved her longest performance there. Documented daily via "selfies" and other photos posted on Instagram: these are the images found in the exhibition. A long frieze stretches over a hundred meters. Time takes shape, boredom as well as exhaustion of the artist is palpable. The images testify to the monotony and disillusionment specific to this life at night and its environment.

In this photographic scrolling is interposed in neon letters in the colors of the rainbow, the sentence: "The games are done, nothing goes anymore!

Linked to the world of gambling, Hsia-Fei Chang uses it daily at the tables and ends up perceiving it as a metaphor for social and / or gender determinism.

Unrolled under the neon light, a carpet takes up the exotic pattern of the gaming club's carpet and invites the visitor to sit down and watch a film: "New Life of a Woman!" composed of images and short filmed moments of Hsia-Fei Chang's professional life, intimate life and life as a mother.

The exclamation of the title takes a sarcastic turn, and ends up sounding like an advertising slogan from the 1950s. Life goes by, roles multiply, and the artist asks again and again: Where is my husband?

Five nights a week, for two years, Hsia-Fei Chang put on a costume: that of the beautiful young woman, devoted to the entertainment of others. Thus, through herself, Hsia-Fei Chang takes a raw and unpretentious look at the world of work, fatality and male/female relationships. She observes and explores cultural and gender stereotypes from a closed but globalized universe and questions human relationships without detour and in particular the place of women in our society.
